Colonizing Continues 36
The Americas were colonized by four West European countries. Spain colo- nized most of south, central and the interior of North America. Portugal colo- nized mostly the eastern coast of South America; Brazil. The French established
colonies along the Canadian St. Lawrence River. Finally the British, you all
know the English-British. They colonized the east coast of North America. All
European countries pressed westward. All forced Native Americans off the land.
Those Native Americans living near European settlements found themselves at
the mercy of colonization.
Mercantilism Is The 17th Century
Economic System Of European Countries.
Monarch-kings established a dominating
relationship with the American colonies. Colonists
settling in new world established profitable plantations.
They all paid taxes to their European Mother land. Mercantilism
benefitted European nations the most. Larger banks emerged across Europe. The
strengthening of Capitalism! They used the new capital to invest in other Euro- pean enterprises. This set off a chain reaction of economic growth; The Second
Commercial Revolution! This one was Huge!
Spain for example, banked gold from Mexico and silver from Peru. Portugal
grew wealthy profiting from Brazilian sugar production. The French profited
from fur trading forts in Canada and sugar plantations in Saint Dominique. So
great was African slavery in St. Dominique, they outnumbered white French col-
onists ten to one! The English also participated in Mercantilism. They shipped
all raw materials from their thirteen English colonies back to Britain. They then
sold finished goods like cotton cloth-textiles right back to their colonists around
the world.
The Columbian Exchange
refers to everything and everyone that
traveled across the Atlantic Ocean
after the Age of Discovery and Encounter.
Many crops were originally from the old world:
Europe, Africa and Asia. Colonists simply planted them in
the Americas. Other crops like corn, tobacco and potatoes were originally from
the Americas. The Columbian Exchange even included people from Europe and
Africa as well as animals such as pigs, horses and cattle. Even germs were a part
of the Columbian Exchange.
